Carotenoids
Carotenoids are natural pigments majorly found in plants. They are majorly responsible for the bright colors in plants, like bright red, orange, and yellow colors seen in many fruits and vegetables. They help in capturing direct light from the sun for photosynthesis and also protect fruits’ and vegetables’ cells from damage caused by too much direct sunlight.
Carotenoids work as antioxidants in human beings. In this way, they help protect cells from harm caused by free radicals and oxidative stress generated by the body. Some of the most common carotenoids are like beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
Beta-carotene is especially important because the body can convert it into vitamin A, which supports healthy vision, good skin, and a strong immune system. Lutein and zeaxanthin are known for their role in protecting eye health and may lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Lycopene, which is commonly found in tomatoes, has also been very much in role in reducing many cancers, even in prostate cancer.
Carotenoids are absorbed better with healthy fat, such as nuts, oil, or seeds.
